Praying that she wasn't a total disappointment to her ancestors, Maria Mendez painted her face like lace, placed a strand of marigolds on the ofrenda with stained fingers, and tugged her mother's cloak around her narrow shoulders before stepping into the streets clogged with Día de Muertos celebrants.
